How to Pass OET | OET Exam Tips: Strategies and Self-Study Tips

To excel, you must grasp the specific requirements and nuances of each sub-test. Before starting your OET preparation journey, it’s crucial to have a deep understanding of the exam’s format. Of course it depends on your current level of English but even candidates whose language level is test ready still need to take time to prepare properly. Here are some strategies and self-study tips to improve your performance for

  1. OET Listening Part A Tips:
Part A of the OET Listening subtest lasts for 15 minutes and requires the test-taker to complete notes based on a consultation between a healthcare professional and a patient.
    – Use the pre-listening time effectively: You have 30 seconds time to read the Extract notes and underline the important keywords before the audio starts. Use this time to get familiar with the context, identify subheadings, and notice any gaps in the notes.
    – Listen to a variety of consultation audios: Try to Listen to different accents and a variety of patient- and healthcare professional-based role plays to improve your listening skills.

  2. OET Listening Part B Tips:
Part B of the OET Listening subtest lasts for 10 minutes and requires the test-taker to answer six multiple-choice questions based on six different extracts, which could be monologues or interactions.
    – Read each question and underline the keywords before listening to the audio.
    – Read the Background Info. (Scenario) to understand the Context of the Question, and then, read the 3 options in the preparation time of 15 Sec provided.

  3. OET Listening Part C Tips: Part C of the OET Listening subtest lasts approximately 15 minutes and requires the test-taker to answer six multiple-choice questions based on two longer audios, which could be presentations or interviews.
    – Use the 90 seconds pre-listening time effectively: Read the questions and options, notice the structure of the interview, underline keywords, and focus on the flow of Audio.
    – Pre-read the options before you hear the audio. And determine the options meaning properly.
    – Practice listening to a variety of longer talks: Listen to speeches or presentations and make notes on the main structure, then listen again and make more detailed notes.

To pass the OET Reading exam, you don’t need OET-specific reading material. Instead, you should read widely. Practise your English-language reading skills and expand your English-language healthcare knowledge.

  1. OET Reading Part A Tips: In Part A, you do not have time to read the texts, so you need to look at the titles of the text and glance at the kind of information that is included in them. You only have 15 minutes to answer 20 questions, so you do not have time to read the texts in detail. This part is testing your ability to scan quickly to find information rather than reading for detail and you will need to balance speed and accuracy.

  2. OET Reading Part B Tips: The most important thing to remember for Part B is that you don’t need to understand every word of a text to find the answer. Often the question will be about the overall message or purpose of the text – you’re not trying to find specific information. Read the possible answers carefully, then skim the text to see which one fits best. The language of the answers will not be exactly the same as the text, so you will need to focus on meaning rather than specific words.

  3. OET Reading Part C Tips: Part C contains two longer texts, each with eight multiple-choice questions. For each question, we have four possible answers. In particular, in Part C you need to focus on what the writer is trying to say, and what the effect of their words is. Comparison, cause and effect, emphasis and suggestion are some of the things you need to recognise in order to find the answers.

The OET writing test is customised and profession specific. For instance, the writing task will be based on a typical workspace situation and will vary from profession to profession. For instance, a nurse does the writing task based on her workplace situation and vice versa. The overall duration to complete the OET writing exam is 45 minutes.
