All about NAATI CCL?

The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd., also known as NAATI, is responsible for examining and accrediting interpreters and translators in Australia. The CCL (Credentialed Community Language) test is a certification that judges your language skills at the community stage. CCL refers to Credentialed Community language. It’s a test that allows candidates looking to settle in Australia with PR to claim five extra points by evaluating their language skills at the community level. The test assesses how well the aspirant can translate the conversation dialogues from English to their chosen language and vice versa.

The CCL tests consist of two dialogues. Each exam dialogue is a discussion between a speaker of your LOTE (Language Other Than English) and an English speaker. Once you hear the chime, you must activate each tape and begin your interpretation.

In NAATI CCL Test you will have to listen to a recording and interpret and translate it. The topics are linked to authentic situations in Australian Society. This recording has to be transmitted to either LOTE to English or English to LOTE.
Since the NAATI CCL test is conducted online, you can attempt it from anywhere in the world.
Every Test Recording consists of 2 dialogues to be translated and interpreted, each having 300 words with distinct segments of 35 words.
The Complete NAATI CCL Test can be completed in about 25-30 minutes in general test conditions.
Each dialogue carries 45 marks out of which you must score 29 in each dialogue. The conditions for passing the NAATI CCL wishes you to score 63 marks out of 90 to pass the exam.
Test results are available in 4-6 weeks upon completing the test.

The dialogues used for the test are based on real-life events you will encounter in your day-to-day life in Australia and reflect Australian culture. They are specially curated and designed to test your comprehension and communication skills in both languages.

A minimum of two examiners will assess a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in English and a LOTE. The two key factors that will affect your scores in this assessment are:

Language Quality: Your competency and proficiency in English and LOTE.
Language Register: The degree of formality with which a candidate conveys the meaning.

Marks are deducted for errors. Errors for which the examiners deduct a candidate’s score are:

Accuracy – Correctness of information
Distortions – Misrepresentation of information
Omissions – Removal of information
Insertions – Addition of information

The Test comprises of two dialogues; each worth 45 marks. In order to pass the test, a candidate requires at least 29 marks in each dialogue and an overall score of 63 out of 90.

The result for the CCL Test will be given as:

- Pass: 63 or higher (marks out of 90)
- Marginal Fail: between 58 and 62.5 (marks out of 90)
- Clear Fail: less than 58 (marks out of 90)

In situations where a candidate achieves 23 out of 45 in Dialogue 1, 41 out of 45 in Dialogue 2 and an Overall Score of 64 out of 90, the result given will be CLEAR FAIL as the candidate hasn’t achieved required score in Dialogue 1 (i.e. 29).
Results are sent via email within 4-6 weeks of the test date and are valid for three years from the date of issue.
Clear Fail results are unable to apply for a review of their test due to the statistical improbability of the result being overturned.
