NAATI CCL Test Format:

• Each of the dialogues will be from different situations and settings.
• Each Dialogue with 12-18 Segments. Each Segment is with 10-35 Words
• The dialogues in the test usually cover real-life scenarios that contribute to the social life of Australian society.
• Candidate need to activate each recording. A chime will be heard 5 seconds after end of each segment. Candidate starts interpreting the segment after chime. The candidate’s response is recorded. Candidate reactivates the recording to play the next segment.
• The Total Test time is about 20-30 minutes. And, NAATI Test Results are available ideally in 7-21 days (Approximately 3 Weeks).
• You may any segment to be repeated. In such instances, the whole segment will be repeated. The first repetition in each dialogue is without penalty; however, any further repetitions will attract the penalty.

General Information about NAATI CCL Test:

• Candidates must have a suitable device for the test delivery – a computer, laptop or tablet that has a camera and microphone.
• The test must be completed in a location that is free of distractions, background noise and other people. The test location will be checked at the start of the test.
• Devices (including mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other smart devices) other than the device being used to take the test must be turned off.
• In order to take to the test, candidates will need to provide proof of their identity (i.e. the photo ID provided with your application – normally your driver’s licence or passport). This should be shown to the camera prior to the start of the test.
• All candidates will be required to be online and logged in to the session at the time advised. If you are late you will not be tested.

The dialogues in the test usually cover real-life scenarios that contribute to the social life of Australian society.

• Financial
• Housing
• Business
• Employment
• Insurance and
• Consumer Affairs

The NAATI CCL test includes two dialogues, each worth 45 marks. 

You need at least 29 marks in each dialogue and an overall score of 63 out of 90 to pass. The test results are 

• A PASS is awarded if you score 63 or higher out of 90.
• A MARGINAL FAIL occurs when your score is between 58 and 62.5.
• A CLEAR FAIL is given if your score is less than 58.

Eg: In situations where a candidate achieves 23 out of 45 in Dialogue 1, 41 out of 45 in Dialogue 2 and an Overall Score of 64 out of 90, the result given will be CLEAR FAIL as the candidate hasn’t achieved required score in Dialogue 1 (i.e. 29). 

It is important to note that you must meet both the individual dialogue requirements and the overall score requirement

NAATI CCL Test Assessment:

• Language Quality: ‘Language Quality’ refers to a candidate’s competency in both English and LOTE
• Language Register: ‘Language Register’ refers to the level of formality with which a candidate transfers the meaning

Common Errors for Which marks are deducted:

At least two examiners assess the NAATI CCL Test individually by using a Deductive Marking System. Here, the types of errors in a candidate’s performance are taken into account by the examiners. The marks are deducted based upon the impact of these errors on the actual meaning of a sentence or a dialogue.

Errors for which the examiners deduct a candidate’s score are:

• Accuracy – Correctness of information
• Distortions – Misrepresentation of information.
• Omissions – Removal of information.
• Insertions – Addition of information.

If two or three of these errors are detected per dialogue, the examiner declares the result as FAIL. Opinions of both examiners are considered in determining whether the candidate has passed the NAATI CCL Test or not. In case, if one of the examiners disagree regarding the performance of the candidate, additional examiners get involved in finalizing the result.
