Why Canada

Reasons students choose Canada

From globally ranked universities and post-study work pathways to scholarships and student-friendly visas — here are ten reasons Indian students rank Canada among the world’s top study destinations.

01

Top-Ranked Canadian Universities

University of Toronto (#21), McGill (#27) and UBC (#34) sit in the QS World Top 50. The U15 group is Canada's research-intensive league - on par with the Russell Group and Ivy League.

02

3-Year Post-Graduation Work Permit

Graduate from any 2-year program at a Designated Learning Institution and you qualify for an open-work PGWP for up to 3 years - no employer sponsorship needed.

03

Direct Pathway to PR

Canadian education + 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience = enough CRS points to qualify for Express Entry. 100,000+ Indians become Canadian PRs every year.

04

Affordable vs USA / UK

Tuition averages CAD 18,000-35,000/year - 30-40% less than equivalent US programs. Public colleges (under 2 years) start as low as CAD 14,000/year.

05

Fast SDS Visa - 20 Days

Indian students with IELTS 6.0+ and a CAD 20,635 GIC qualify for the Student Direct Stream visa - the fastest study permit pathway, decided in just 20 calendar days.

06

Largest Indian Diaspora Outside India

1.8 million Indians live in Canada and 230,000+ Indian students study there every year. Indian groceries, restaurants, temples and clubs in every major city.

07

Healthcare Access

Provincial health insurance (OHIP, MSP, etc.) covers most international students - free GP visits, hospital treatment and emergency care while you study.

08

Bilingual Education Options

Most universities teach in English. Quebec institutions (McGill, Concordia, Laval) offer English programs in a French-speaking province - a unique cultural advantage.

09

Spouse Open Work Permit

Spouses of master's and PhD students automatically qualify for a Spouse Open Work Permit - rare among study destinations and a major plus for married Indian students.

10

Co-op & Internship Culture

Most Canadian programs offer paid co-op terms (12-16 months total) at companies like Shopify, RBC, BMO, Telus, Loblaw - real Canadian work experience before you graduate.

Costs & Budget · Canada

Cost of studying in Canada for Indian students

Planning a budget for studying in Canada can feel overwhelming — tuition, living costs, visa fees, health insurance and pre-departure expenses all need to be accounted for. With proper planning, an international degree from Canada can be one of the most rewarding investments for Indian students, opening up global career opportunities and post-study work pathways.

Tuition fees vary widely by university tier and program. Use the tabbed breakdown on the right to compare bachelor’s, master’s, MBA, medicine and PhD costs in Canada — with notes on each program type and typical fee ranges in local currency.

Monthly living costs vary sharply by city. Refer to the city-by-city breakdown for rent, food, transport and total monthly budgets in Canada’s top student cities. Choose your destination based on both academic fit and cost of living to plan accommodation, food and lifestyle accurately.

For your Canada student visa application, you’ll need to show proof of funds covering tuition plus living costs for the first year of your program. Combine the funds-proof figure with one-time pre-departure costs (visa fee, English test, flights and initial setup) to build a realistic total budget.

Student Lifestyle · Canada

Life as an international student in Canada

Settle in faster than you think. From accommodation to healthcare, part-time work and the strong Indian community — here’s what student life in Canada actually looks like.

Student Housing

On-campus dorms (CAD 800-1,500/month with meal plan), private student housing (Parkside, Quad, CIBC Place) or shared apartments (CAD 700-1,200 per room). Most international students go off-campus after year 1.

Public Transport

Toronto TTC, Vancouver TransLink, Montreal STM and Calgary CTrain offer cheap student passes (UPass: CAD 50-90/month). Cycling and Greyhound make Canada affordable to navigate.

Food & Dining

Indian groceries at Iqbal Foods, Patel Bros, Lally's and No Frills. Hindu temples in every city run free langar. Weekly groceries CAD 80-120 for one student.

Culture & Outdoors

Hiking in Banff, skiing in Whistler, NHL hockey, Toronto Raptors NBA, Just for Laughs Festival - Canadian student life balances winter sports with multicultural festivals.

On / Off-Campus Work

Study permit holders can work 24 hours/week off-campus and unlimited on-campus during term, full-time during breaks. Minimum wages CAD 15-17/hr enable CAD 1,200+ monthly earnings.

Indian Community

Brampton, Surrey BC, Mississauga and Markham have huge Indian populations. Diwali Mela, Vaisakhi parade, Bollywood concerts and 200+ Hindu/Sikh temples nationwide.

Healthcare

Provincial health insurance (OHIP, MSP, AHCIP, etc.) covers most international students after a 3-month wait. UHIP at most universities bridges the wait period.

Weather & Seasons

Cold winters (-10 to -25°C in Ontario, milder in BC), beautiful summers (20-30°C), spectacular autumn foliage. Vancouver and Victoria have the mildest year-round weather.

Funding & Scholarships · Canada

Generous scholarships for Indian students in Canada

Studying in Canada opens up thousands of scholarship opportunities for Indian students every year, ranging from fully-funded flagship government awards to partial tuition waivers from individual universities. Together they can reduce your effective study cost by 30–100% — serious applicants stack 2–3 awards each cycle.

Use the tabbed widget on the right to compare fully-funded scholarships, partial awards and university-specific schemes available for Indian students applying to Canada. Each row shows the award amount, eligibility level, what it covers and the application window.

Apply early. Most flagship awards close 4–8 months before your intended intake. Build a strong applicant profile (compelling SOP, leadership track record, clear career narrative) and target 4–6 awards per cycle to maximise your funding chances.

I had four Canada offers within a month and EE helped me compare them tuition-by-tuition, ranking-by-ranking, before I picked Simon Fraser University. Their honesty about which course matched my career goals saved me from making an expensive mistake.

Your Canada questions, answered

Everything Indian students typically ask before flying to Canada — from costs and visas to scholarships and post-study work rights.

How much does it cost to study in Canada as an Indian student?
Total cost ranges from CAD 30,000-50,000/year for affordable colleges (Conestoga, Humber, Centennial) to CAD 60,000-90,000/year for top universities (UofT, UBC, McGill). All-in for 1-2 year programs: ₹20-65 lakh including tuition, GIC, living, visa and flights.
What is the SDS visa for Canada?
Student Direct Stream (SDS) is the fastest study permit pathway for Indian students. Requirements: IELTS 6.0+ overall, CAD 20,635 GIC, full first-year tuition payment, upfront medical. Standard processing time is 20 calendar days vs 8-16 weeks for non-SDS applications.
What is PGWP and how do I qualify?
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit for international graduates from DLIs. Programs of 8 months-2 years get a PGWP equal to program length. 2-year+ programs get a 3-year PGWP - the gold standard for PR aspirants. Apply within 180 days of graduation.
Can I bring my spouse or family to Canada?
Spouses of master's and PhD students automatically qualify for a Spouse Open Work Permit (SOWP) - they can work for any employer at any role. Children can attend public K-12 schools for free. Bachelor's and college diploma students can no longer bring spouses on SOWP since March 2024.
How does Canada's Express Entry work for PR?
After completing your studies and gaining 1+ year of skilled Canadian work experience (NOC 0, A or B), you become eligible for Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry. CRS scores of 470+ typically receive ITAs. Provincial Nominee Programs offer additional pathways with 600 bonus CRS points.
Can I work part-time while studying in Canada?
Yes - international students can work up to 24 hours/week off-campus during term and full-time during scheduled breaks. On-campus work is unlimited. Minimum wages range CAD 15-17/hr depending on province; you can earn CAD 1,200-1,800/month.
Which Canadian city is best for Indian students?
Toronto for finance/tech and largest Indian community (Brampton/Mississauga). Vancouver for sustainability/PNW lifestyle (Surrey BC has huge Punjabi community). Montreal for affordability and bilingual experience. Waterloo for engineering/tech co-op opportunities.
How do I apply for the Canada study permit?
Get your LOA first, pay tuition deposit, buy GIC (CAD 20,635), complete IELTS/CELPIP, take upfront medical exam, then submit online via IRCC portal with all documents. Pay CAD 235 study permit fee + CAD 85 biometrics. SDS approves in 20 days; non-SDS in 8-16 weeks.
Are Canadian colleges as good as universities for Indian students?
Yes for PR-focused students. Public colleges (Conestoga, Humber, Centennial, Sheridan) offer 1-2 year PG diplomas at CAD 14,000-22,000/year - half the cost of universities. Graduates qualify for the full 3-year PGWP and same Express Entry eligibility as university grads.
Are scholarships available for Indian students in Canada?
Yes - Vanier (CAD 50K/yr × 3), Trudeau Foundation (CAD 60K/yr × 4), Pearson at UofT (full ride), McGill Entrance, UBC International Major Entrance and 1,000+ university merit awards. Most are auto-considered with admission, no separate scholarship application.
Can I bring my parents to visit Canada?
Yes - parents can visit on a Tourist Visa (TRV) or the Super Visa (10-year multiple entry, valid for 5-year stays each visit). Super Visa requires medical insurance and proof your child meets minimum income thresholds. Many parents visit for graduation ceremonies.
How long does the entire study abroad process take?
Plan for 12-15 months: 4-6 weeks for IELTS, 8-12 weeks for applications, 4-8 weeks waiting for offers, 4-8 weeks for GIC + medical + visa, plus 4-week pre-departure window. Start now if planning for September 2026 intake.
